The Fantastic Adventures of Erin and Nate in Chile

Does anyone have anything nice to say about the United States?

Because no one here does. And we are getting sick and tired of having to defend our country to everyone who finds out we're from the United States. As soon as they find out, they blame us for McDonald's, Bush, war, and all other evil that exists in the world. I know we may not be Utopia, but we're certainly not the satanic country they make us out to be. Also, people seem to believe that we are constantly lied to/misguided in the United States and we have no idea how awful our country really is. So they take the opportunity to tell us, because of course everyone who lives outside the United States is an expert on United States politics and policies. I'm sorry about this very un-fantastical adventure blog entry, but Nate and I have had one too many people complaining to us about the United States, and we're downright sick of it. Rant over.

  • I usually ask one question: Which country in the world has the most immigrants? People vote with their feet, and that's the real measure of a country. Now relax and remove all the best things from Chile; it's what Conquistadoras do...

  • Most people in your situation would say they're from Canada, eh?

I could probably write ten easy pages on your latest blog entry, but mainly we're all most interested in how your current camera will disappear.

  • I say you go with the exact opposite of the Canada suggestion and start carrying around an American flag everywhere, waving it and shouting pro-USA slogans at people. Then, at least, the complainers would know their hate was falling of deaf ears.

  • I wasn't SUGGESTING you guys should say you're Canadians, by the way.

  • At least we don't have military dictatorships and murder our citizens... oh wait, except in Texas. Don't forget to remind everyone that the majority of the US did not elect Bush (especially not the young, liberal, dare I say educated, voters). Nevermind that most people here don't vote and immigrants aren't allowed to vote.

  • didn't you guys have a blog entry about how they put mayonnaise on hot dogs? mcdonalds sounds gourmet next to that, and normally i would rather eat a big pile of crap than dine with ronald. i think maybe if these people like mayo on hot dogs, then they have no idea how awful THEIR country really is. that shit doesn't fly in the USofA. now, make with a real blog entry - more glamour shots of nifty.

  • Then you're probably running into the wrong people all the time. I've been to the states twice. First time I stayed 6 months just because I wanted to and enjoyed the first time so much. I stayed in New York and went to Washington twice, stayed there a couple of days as well. You wouldn't believe how welcome I felt when I got there. Everyone said I should be frightened by the fact that once I get to the airport, police would ask me thousands of questions about my visit and its reasons. But the guy even liked my shirt. I love the states, to be honest all I want to do is go back or even live there, I miss it terribly because I couldn't make it to New York this year. I love how people say sorry when they pass by and push you in a crowded street, in Chile most people don't. Or how people offer to help you, or how much they respect pregnant women, how great Starbucks tasted, I miss Pax, and a bunch of other things that make a country a nice one.
And when I'm not in the states... I love tourists. And I wish you lovely days here and hope you find great people in the end rather than a bunch of haters that, I assure you talk pure ignorance.
